The material surrounding a bathtub is commonly called a bathtub surround. It refers to the finished wall surface installed around the sides of a built-in tub, especially the areas exposed to water during bathing or showering.
However, several related terms may be used depending on which part of the bathtub is being discussed. A wall covering, front panel, tiled platform, waterproof backing, and portable tub body all perform different functions.
A bathtub surround covers the walls above and beside a fixed bathtub.
Its main purposes are to protect the wall structure from water, provide a cleanable surface, and create a finished appearance around the bathing area.

An apron hides the underside of the bathtub, support structure, and some plumbing connections. It may be integrated into the tub or installed as a separate removable panel.
When plumbing components are located behind the apron, an access panel may be required for future inspection and repair.
Completely sealing the plumbing behind permanent tile can make drain and overflow maintenance more difficult.
A bathtub deck is the horizontal platform built around a drop-in or undermount bathtub.
It may be finished with tile, stone, solid-surface material, or waterproof panels. The deck supports the tub rim and may also provide space for faucets, bath products, and controls.
The structure beneath the deck must be designed to support the weight of the bathtub, water, and user.

A decorative surface alone does not create a reliable waterproof system. Joints, corners, penetrations, and transitions must be sealed according to the selected installation method.
